So I just signed on…

So I just signed on for my first major exam on the 31st of August, I have a second exam on the 2nd of September. Kind of nervous, these being two rather large exams, been a very long time since I have done an exam and am not quite sure what to expect really.

So far I’ve had to find an invigilator (to sit the exam with me due to I’m doing this degree off campus and interstate at the moment (still looking after family members)) as well as sort out a testing centre for the other exam. Been an extremely busy week, I’m almost two weeks behind in course/text readings, so have been catching up on those when I can. Mind you I’ve been bored as heck while doing it so I ended up opening up on the server box and spent 15 making a script to push posts to twitter, work pretty damn well to boot.

So anyway, back to study and work, I’ll try not to let too large a gap get between posts again.

Just some updates

As I write this I realise that it’s been a while since I have posted again and with that in mind I’m going to just cover some updates and what’s happening at the moment.

So basically units have started and study is very much under way and as such time is at a premium. With most of my time now focused on Information systems and the various styles of management that is used in different organisations I have had little time to update this site, note you can catch me on my twitter steam pretty much everyday all day, I’ll try and keep this updated as often as I can.

So at this point I’ve pretty much been taking notes and making connections with things to create a solid foundation in understanding new and different concepts and information. I have created somewhat of a decent note taking style consisting of taking down summaries of information within the topics, then writing down what page it came from and under what heading/title underneath. This works pretty well I have found so far and keeps things nice and clean for when I need to quickly jump back to the book for something more in-depth with the topic being discussed.

I have also finished up with my last units, with final marks being received, I’m rather happy to report that I managed to pass with a 80.7% which for me is pretty damn good. Going back into study after being away for so long has been a bit of a wake-up call and has motivated me to get the best marks possible and continue on with my studies as well as hopefully reach my final goal of working and living in Japan, might be a bit unrealistic but damn I’ll give it my best shot.

And with all that said and done I think I have covered most things up till this point in time and as such I best get back to work on one of the reports I have due next week.

You can catch me on twitter through @sprckt or just leave a comment on here.

Next unit enrolment time

Well it’s been fun (not), but this unit is almost over. So as this one comes to a close it’s time to start looking at the next two, that’s right two, units. I’ve been sitting here wondering what units to actually cover and I’m somewhat at an impasse as to what to choose. I have decided that I can leave the choice of my majors until a little bit later on, however I must choose some of the core units for this degree. Now this is where things are somewhat never wracking, because it’s been a while since I have done any study(except for this unit), I still find myself rather nervous when it comes to things.

So I’m sitting here looking at what is on offer to me right now:

  • Statistics and Research methods
  • Accounting Fundamentals
  • Business law
  • Information Systems Fundamentals
  • Microeconomics
  • Intro to Management
  • Marketing Concepts

Now I’m guessing that with all that on the board and me being able to pick two of them each study period, that well I’m not going to be actually too swamped with work. Do I get the hard the hard ones right up and out of the way or do I take things slow and start off with the easier units and graduate from there, choices.
With my line of thinking I’m guessing that I’ll try and do the easier ones first and go from there. So, Intro to Management and I’m guessing Marketing Concepts might be the best way to go.

Anyway, still have just one or two things left to do within this unit (current group project(UGH) and then a single small essay left). So with all things said and done I’m going to close out this post now and get back to scratching my head trying to think of ways to get the group to work out.

Signing off..

Busy busy busy

Been busy as anything. First thing results; got first essay results back and well toe say not happy isn’t far enough. But it seems as though I placed the wrong copy in when I submitted, so not only did I get low marks I also ended up slapping myself for stupidity. Just means I have to work harder then before to get the group work to flow smooth and get high group and individual marks.

So now, on top of having to work with a group (which I loathe), I have to push myself harder, to get a much much higher outcome. So I need to improve my memory and study skills. I am prepared to do dive in as much as humanly possible. I guess anger is somewhat of a good motivator, being I made a mistake and I have pissed myself of to the point where it has motivated me to do more and more.

I guess that is pretty much it for now. I had a whole thing planned out but then some things happened (as they do) so that, as they say, is that.

Lectures & thoughts

Lectures 5 & 6 were released (well the transcripts were) because there is no lecture this week due to it being Good Friday and all. So pretty much they revolved around team building, team work, communications, and education over a long distance (online or correspondence). Not much to say really, as I had already covered team building in a previous post. The education over distance part well, it’s not really all that interesting to start or finish with so I won’t really touch it.

So pretty much I don’t have a great deal to talk about. I had an interesting day that it for sure, with the launch of an ICBM from North Korea on the lips of quite a few people, I’m rather happy that I took part in spreading the news and keeping people up to date with things as they happened. Having been the first person in Aus to report it to people (knew about the launch 2 mins after it happened, and 12 minutes before it was reported on any news wire/network in the world). I wasn’t the first to report it though that goes to a man living in Japan @jasonhill. He managed to beat the world wire by 15 minutes, and report it as it was happening through his own twitter account. I was talking with him as it was happening discussing things and sharing information as we were getting it from Japanese TV news channels.

So all and all it’s been an interesting day, now with everything said and done, I think I might just relax a bit now and wrap this post up (been typing all morning). So I’ll leave with this final thought.

Team Work Building

Well it’s that time of week again, tutorials and lecture notes released.

Gearing up for the Wiki group assessment that is coming up, the lecture this week looks to be pretty much just about team building and working together. While I personally prefer to work alone (I work faster and more efficiently that way). So far I have about a third of the group ready with the possibility of another to join in the next few days.

When it comes to teams your supposed to be form a bond with the people that you are going to be working with; be it for a short time or an extended period. This includes, contact details, getting to know everyone’s personality, and setting a place and time for meetings. It is also around this time that you define everyone’s tasks, and defining skills that are included within the group.

After all the “getting to know everyone” stage, and once everyone has settled into a routine, people tend to go off and still work within a sub-group or even independently. At this time, people should start getting back together and meeting up to discuss progress and results along the way. Management skills can play an important role in how to keep everyone in order and calmly working together.

With the end of a project looming, communication should be increased and everyone should be calibrating more. After the project is completed and submitted, the team should celebrate and disband.

Sounds kind of a sterile post but I thought I would write a somewhat formal post. It’s not pretty but it’s fine for a blog post IMHO.

General Comment

Ok, so I said last time that I would post a small bit about some grammar tips, I won’t be…

I’ve pretty much got a week worth of nothing to do because, the deadline for my essay was shifted another week. I had already submitted my final before the old deadline, and I have decided that just because a couple of people in this unit are having issues doesn’t mean that I should become lax in my work.

With all things said and done I’ve maybe done about two weeks of solid work over the last 4 weeks because there just isn’t enough work being pushed out for us. OK, so it’s not a bad thing cause I’m just getting my feet wet again, but still I wouldn’t have minded a bit more work so I can keep my pace up and active.

At least next SP I will be going a couple more units instead of just the one pre-requisite. Then it will be accounting and tourism pre-requisites, so I should be a bit more busy and managing my time better, with out so much time wasted.

I prefer to be a busy person that one at station, I’ve been still far too long.

So that was pretty much just a rant, to sum it up in one word.

Grammar, check. Spelling, check. Transitions, check. Everything make sense, check. Feeling good and ready to go?

NO. But I it’s the best I can do at this point in time and with the topic chosen. So as the title says, essay submitted; ahead of schedule as well I might add.

Truth be told, I actually re-wrote the entire thing from scratch. Well almost I kept the opening sentence for the Introduction, it was really the only thing that was salvageable. I must have edited the conclusion about 5 times to get it to sound right and flow nicely (inner perfectionist showing through). So, at this point in time I’m sitting here rather nervous as to how well(or shockingly bad) I did.

Final Draft/Reflective post

Ok, just finishing up my final draft, and getting it ready to go. It’s been an interesting ride actually, from trying to remember how everything is meant to be set out and structured, to using correct grammar and syntax when writing something academically. Truthfully, I actually had trouble with my grammar, it has been quite a while since I had to write anything out in full. I’m more of a note taker, writing a bit quick and messy, with no regards for grammar, spelling, or syntax(my high school English teacher wouldn’t be happy if she heard me say that).

So it has been all-in-all good for me to get back studying after such a long time. At least being able to back to Uni (at 22), and be able to finish a degree, with a triple major as well, within three years is a good thing.

Anyway, that’s it in this post for now, I might post later on on some tips for grammar and structure, cause it’s always good to remember.
